Albinism

  • ALBINISM is a disease in which a person has partial or complete loss of a pigment called melanin.
  •
  • Melanin is a dark pigment which protects the skin from radiation. The basic role of the pigment melanin is to absorb the UV on the surface of the skin and prevent any damage to the skin. Solar radiation increases pigment melanin in the skin and leads to sun tanning. Many albinos do not have the pigment melanin and they do not get a tan when exposed to sunlight. Hence, they are extremely sensitive to the sun's UV rays and their skin may get sunburn if they do not have proper protection from sunlight.

Albinism Disability and Low Vision

The vision of people with albinism is not the same as other people’s vision. They have vision problems since the coloring of their iris is reduced. Even though it varies from one person to another, their vision is around 5%-10%. For this reason, they are regarded as persons with disabilities in Turkey.

Essential Requirements of Albinos

Using low vision aids makes daily life easier. Primary vision aids include binoculars, electronic telescopes, and telescopic lenses. Rehabilitation services for persons with low vision may also help. Albinos, even babies, must wear sunglasses on sunny days.
